Title: Wow, I ROCKED those meters
Post by: Vitandus on Wed, 2009-07-08 : 01:40
So, you're looking at meters from a raid (http://wowwebstats.com/z3dbt55oorzoe?s=bossdown) and telling everyone in the guild that you are rocking the DPS. Stop right there - it's time to come back down to earth.

First off, read Rod's post on how damage meters make WoW players suck (http://hordedefenseleague.org/blog/2009/01/26/how-damage-meters-make-wow-players-suck/). Seriously, go read it.

Now go read my posts on how to read damage meters - Part 1 (http://hordedefenseleague.org/blog/2009/02/09/how-to-read-raid-meters-part-1/) and Part 2 (http://hordedefenseleague.org/blog/2009/02/11/how-to-read-raid-meters-part-2/). Seriously, go read them.

Ok, now let's revisit the meters. If it's a Naxxramas raid, take Loatheb, Patchwerk, Rasuvious, and Noth out of the equation. Those fights all involve people standing in one place and beating the hell out of the boss. That's not  a true indication of raid performance. Ulduar, for example, involves fights with lots of movement.

Now take Thaddius out of the equation - you get an insane buff. For that fight, look to see how you performed compared to other of your class.

Take a moment and look at each fight. How did you perform when you had to move? When you had to pay attention to adds or void zones?

Did you still push amazing DPS? If so, great. You should do well in Ulduar.

Is the DPS now a lot less than you thought? Well, now you know that you need improvement. Ulduar is a lot less forgiving.

Where can I go to read up on how to better play my Death Knight and how I need to play her better so that I can rock the meters while I am moving around and having to pay attention?

Ask questions. Get a feel for the rhythm of the class. Practice, practice, practice! Read the Unholy and Blood DPS posts Dave and I wrote (I'll write a Frost one when I feel motivated). Practice - a set rotation goes to hell when battle is ensued.

When raiding, you must consider other things than just damage. I have noticed that a lot of you are not using your damage mitigation abilities. You should be doing that to ease the strain on the healers. Any thing you do to push off damage helps the raid succeed.

Hybrids should be helping with healing as they can. There is no reason for me to see at the end of a wipe that hybrids cast zero heals, especially when it is a fight where damage spikes are a known quantity. Yes, it may only be a few percentage of overall healing done, but every little bit helps.
