Title: PvE Priest Specs: Disc, Holy, and Shadow
Post by: Goull on Wed, 2010-03-17 : 12:03
I thought I would put up my suggestions for various PvE specs along with glyph choices.  Hopefully this will be a helpful guide for newer priests, priest alts, or those looking for what might be a different perspective.  All of the builds are designed with raiding in mind.  If there's interest, I could put up some stuff on PvP specs.

Disc:

The Disc talents I think are pretty set in stone.  You might be able to drop Focused Will if you really want some extra holy talents, but that's the only flexibility I see.

Holy, however, you can be a little more flexible.  For PvE, I find healing focus pretty useless, especially with the number of instant cast spells Disc uses.  As such, I like to pick up renew. It's not our best spell, but hitting someone with a shield and a renew is a good combo.  Greater Heal is a rare spell to cast, so points into Divine Fury, in my mind are a waste.  I use to have Spell Warding full, because getting to pay less attention to myself was always a plus, but that was a personal preference.  Desperate Prayer is also a personal preference, but I tend to PvP a lot, so I'm used to having it.

Major Glyphs: Penance (Must have), Flash Heal (Great for mana management), and PW: Shield (Must have).

Minor Glyphs: Levitate, Shadow Protection, and Shadowfiend (PvE wise, this is the only essential one).

Holy:

There are very few things you really need from the Disc part of the tree.  Imp. Inner fire is for the Spellpower boost, meditation for mana, and inner focus for if you're in a jam (though I could see dropping this).  Threat is a non-issue with endgame raiding, so Silent Resolve isn't much help (more of a PvP talent now).

For Holy, I really wanted to make sure I had Guarding Spirit, which is just an amazing spell, especially when glyphed.  I also wanted to maximize the other 'big guns' for Holy: Circle of Healing and Prayer of Healing.  I didn't bother with Healing Prayers because mana regen is so insane right now.  Serendipity, along with Divine Fury, allows you have Greater Heal as a viable spell if things get crazy.

An argument can be made for Lightwell, it's actually a great spell, but most people (read: DPS) are either not smart enough to use it, or are simply not used having it available.

Major Glyphs: Guardian Spirit (Must have, see below), Circle of Healing (Must have), and either Flash heal or Prayer of healing (I'd be inclined for Prayer of Healing, but I couldn't say it with as much confidence as the previous two).  If your fellow raiders are smart enough to use Lightwell, that's also a good option.

Minor Glyphs: Levitate, Shadow Protection, and Shadowfiend (PvE wise, this is the only essential one).

A note about Guardian Spirit.  With the glyph, it turns into an amazing tanking cooldown that you can use every minute, as long as the 'extra life' effect doesn't trigger.  It'll take a little getting used to, but your tanks (and by extension the rest of the raid) will love you for it.  It's great for ICC when a big damage spike is coming.

Shadow:

Disc talents are pretty essential, not much to say there.

This is the spec I raid in, though if you're still gearing up, you may want to drop Improved VE for 2 points into Veiled Shadows.  This makes your Shadowfiend have a shorter cooldown for mana management.  You could also drop Improved Shadowform.  I like it for the utility of dropping movement impairing effects and to make sure I can still Mind Flay while I'm standing in the fire, like a good DPS should.  So between Improved VE, Improved Shadowform, and Veiled Shadows, you have 4 points to play with.

Major Glyphs: Mind Flay (Must have), Shadow (Must have), and then you have some options.  I like Dispersion, mostly as a way of avoiding damage spikes.  However, this is only because I have the gear to worry less about mana regen.  While you're still gearing up, Shadow Word: Pain is a fine choice.

Minor Glyphs: Levitate, Shadow Protection, and Shadowfiend (PvE wise, this is the only essential one).

Joseph - I took Inspiration in the Holy tree. It just seemed too useful:

QuoteInspiration - Rank 3/3
Reduces your target's physical damage taken by 10% for 15 sec after getting a critical effect from your Flash Heal, Heal, Greater Heal, Binding Heal, Penance, Prayer of Mending, Prayer of Healing, or Circle of Healing spell.

Yea? Nay?

Very nice ability there Pat.  I haven't seen a Holy build without it...Disc probably uses it too.

Yes, Inspiration is a great talent to have, I've always run with it as Disc.  I made sure to include it in Disc and Holy example builds.

Weird - I think Dave! is right, and Wowhead is broken. When I checked your links earlier this weekend, the builds were totally different and there was no Inspiration. Looks like what I have now.
