Title: What's Pat drinking?
Post by: Vitandus on Fri, 2010-07-30 : 20:50
A new feature - what am I drinking?

Tonight's drink is a Wit's End Ale from Sweetwater Tavern. It's a Belgian-style white, brewed with wheat and a light spice touch of orange and coriander. It is cloudy, as with most wheat beers. I find the slight orange flavor enhances the crispness of the beer.

That's a good beer, of course, anything I've ever had from Sweetwater is delicious.  If you ever get to Knoxville, TN head to the Downtown Grill and Brewery.  It's a bar/grill I worked at for 4 years that brews 7 styles of beer.

Gaelic Ale by Highland Brewing. It's a lot hoppier than I'd expect from a Gaelic-inspired brew.

Tonight's beer is the Flying Dog 20th Anniversary "Raging Bitch" Belgian-style IPA. Pours a bit hazy, without much head. Flowery on the nose, an an interesting subtle bubblegum scent. Very hoppy, with a slight orange flavor lingering on the palate. Sweet, but not overpowering. The 8.3% ABV will creep up on you, especially on an empty stomach.

The camera metered off the bright cubes in Dave!'s drink, so the red of the beer comes out quite a bit darker.

Caiprinha tonight - cachaça, crushed ice, muddled lime and sugar. Delicious.

Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin Ale is tonight's brew. Very light head, and a very light, thin body. Bouquet is faintly touched with pumpkin. Slightly malty.

I like my pumpkin ales to have a lot more feel, and the anemic body on this one left a lot to be desired.

Ah, hard to believe that the pumpkin ale/beer season has come around again! Let me know if and when Sweetwater releases theirs. I'll drive over with my empty growlers for that stuff!

You like hops? You will love this Weyerbacher Hops Infusion. Nice head, good body, smells of coppery malts, but no malt flavor. As expected with a super hop brew, it leaves a bitter but not astringent aftertaste.

First is the Founders Brewing Breakfast Stout (http://www.foundersbrewing.com/the-lineup/breakfast-stout). Amazingly good. Chocolate and coffee flavors mixed with a delicious oatmeal stout. This one is hard to find, but well worth the effort. Buy more than one pack as it is a seasonal offering.

Next up is the Founders Brewing Porter (http://www.foundersbrewing.com/the-lineup/porter). Dark, smooth, and not sweet like some porters, nor too bitter like others. Just right.

Pat,

Haven't checked in here in a while, but I see you got some Founders.  I live about 10 minutes away from there and am a mug club member and regular visitor.  Think about their bottles and realize that their good shit is only found on tap.  Breakfast Stout is good, but you need to find some KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout).  Its Breakfast Stout aged in bourbon barrels, damn good.  Less coffee, more booze.  Red's Rye is also very good, and you should be able to find it relatively easily.

If you want some Founder's beers, I may be able to hook you up in trade or something.  They do some amazing things.

And!  I have the hookups for New Holland beer now (I work there).  Dragon's Milk, Envious, and Blue Sunday (first is bourbon barrel aged imperial stout, the last two are sour barrel aged beers) are my favorites.

lol.  what do you want a picture of?

If I can get my brother to pull out all of his beers in his beer cellar I'll post a picture of that.

But -- if you have ever heard of any great beer, especially in the US, chances are either I've had it or we have it in the cellar.

I love Weihenstephaner Hefe Weiss, ever have that?  They claim to be the oldest brewery in the world (1040).  But being German, i'm sure there is a lot of rules of what is considered a brewery =)

Haven t had it for a while, maybe I should order some =)

It was indeed tasty. Any beer that has a Hunter S Thompson quote on it deserves to be consumed.

A little hoppier than I expected, and the chocolate malt flavor is not as enhanced. Overall a drinkable porter. Not one of my recent favorites but nonetheless a good beer.

IBU: 32
ABV: 5.8%

The local Wegman's has been pushing this Northern Virginia brewed beer pretty heavily. I was skeptical at first. Brewed with "raw wheat and oats, and steeped with coriander, orange peel and grains of paradise", this Belgian style beer is very drinkable. The spices are not overpowering in either nose or palate, and at 5% ABV, the beer is not too heavy for summertime drinking in the Old Dominion heat and humidity.

Deep amber, not as intensely hoppy as many American craft IPAs, slight piney flavor on the tongue. Standard ABV for an IPA at 7.1%.
