Title: Paladin and 4.0.1
Post by: Vitandus on Wed, 2010-10-13 : 17:35
The thing that struck me last night (and in the beta) is that Paladins are no longer a first-come, first-serve with a modicum of priority. Up until now, one could faceroll your way to good DPS. With this new system and the inclusion of Holy Power, there is more thought required. Do you blow all of your Holy Power now, or wait until you have enough to make it really hurt? Are you fighting multiple mobs, so drop Divine Storm, or do you hit Templar's Verdict? I like these changes and had a lot more fun playing Kellanon last night than I have had in a while.

Now the question is what is my off-spec.... :)

I really like the changes too, the fact that you gotta go back and relearn your class and rotation a bit makes the game feel a bit newer to me. I got a new urge to want to play all the time   :)

I too want to play my pally more.  It is fun trying to figure out how the spells work and when you want to hit them with all your power.  It is a little confusing to me right now too but I hope to play more and get into how Holy power works.

Just a few quick thoughts for Paladin tanking.

Build:  Right now a lot of paladins are specing into Guarded by light.  Its the talent that gives you a protection bubble when you over heal yourself with Word of Glory.  Unfortunately WoG sucks.  Least for the time being.  In order for it to work well you will need to put 2 points into Eternal Glory and 2 points into Guarded by light, and then use all 3 Holy Power in hope that the healer has been doing  his/her job and all the healing you did to yourself was over healing thus creating the bubble.

While having a buffer is nice, the trade off is threat.  In order to keep the bubble up you need to continually use your holy power to fuel WoG.  This means that you are no using SotR..at least not to its full potential.  If that is the case, that is a lot of threat and damage lost.  While running ICC the other night I watched as SotR was critting for 20k+.

So instead of a bubble, I opted for a 3/32/2 built putting 3 points in Judgments of the pure, and 2 into Crusade for what should be an optimal threat build.

Rotation:  Its fairly simple, and not much different from before the new patch.
AS-HotR-J-CS or HW-HoTR-J-AS_HotR-SotR.  The trick is to max out your holy power, then Shield of the Righteous for a lot of damage and threat.   I also keep Crusader Strike on my bar for bosses or single targets since the AoE from hammer won't do much good.

With the high levels of damage being put out by the casters, I find myself sometimes SotR early just for the initial threat boost.
