Title: Ugh, Microsoft
Post by: Capuloclavo on Fri, 2008-10-24 : 23:46
I wanted to call this post "Microsoft sucks the dirty, hairy, flea-ridden, pus filled nodule covered, droopy nutsack on an undead goat with HIV"  but it wouldn't fit.

The latest Windows update has fucked up my PC far beyond the point where a restore from previous point will fix it.  It won't boot in safe mode, and booting from a cd does no good, it still won't boot after I try a repair.  Fun times.  Love to play WoW with you guys, but it ain't happening until I do a full wipe and reinstall.

PS sending this message by booting my PC with a live-Linux boot CD, imagine that.

Talking to a friend of mine who maintains 5000 Windows servers and innumerable Windows desktops. Evidently there was a patch that went out and it wiped 60% of his hosts - desktop and server.

He is very, very angry.

Apparently I needed to update my Nvidia drivers.  They are what's causing the problem.

I count myself lucky then.  Two reasons. One I'm only responsible for a couple hundred hosts, and two..... i have a subordinate I can make worry about it  ;D

Update:  After applying the latest Nvidia drivers and allowing the update to install. It's still fucked.  Backed up to a restore point over a week ago and instructed the firewall (non-Microsoft) to ignore and deny all attempts by the updater software to connect to Microsoft.

Is there a Linux version of WoW?  I know you can run it under the WINE emulator, but I'd rather trust something native.

Can't you just tell Windows to prompt before doing updates?  That's how I have mine set up.

Clearly you missed the first rule of Management 101 - you are responsible for everything your staff does.  ::)

Rod - WINE works pretty well last I tried it (a year+ ago). I's poor or I would give you my Macbook Pro.

Thanks man!  I'm too poor to buy a Macbook, so I might try Linux with WINE.

I DID say that I was responsible for them, but I don't have to worry about fixing them....HE does  8)

second rule, if you can't be confident in your staff, get a new staff.

Is that why you keep ordering penis pumps?

QuoteSo on Tuesday, all of CodeWeavers products, which allow Mac and Linux users to run Windows applications, can be downloaded for free -- instead of $40 each -- at the company's website, www.codeweavers.com.

Timing could not be better for you, Capuloclavo.

I can help you on the management thing. As far as your small pee pee, I am a human tripod, so can't help you there.
