so basically what Blizz is saying is "no more forum trolling, or we sic an over caffinated, hyper aggressive and quite possibly john lennon stalker type crazy person after you!".  God bless them....bastards...

James

Unrelated, undirected rant ...

I just want to say that after seeing the word "troll" ...

  • Describe a person that others don't agree with
  • Used to self-defend a person who was in reality just being stupid
  • Thrown out to accuse anyone that doesn't conform to the norm of trying to incite a response

... for the last 10 years ... I am really, really tired of seeing this word. Maybe 1% of forum posters are true, goal-oriented trolls. Maybe 1%. People need to find a new word or at least check a dictionary to make sure the word fits. "Troll" is rarely an accurate fit.

I know I'm really late posting to this, but I think that the RealID feature is incomplete without offering people some way to change the name on their account.  I would pay $20 or more to change the fucking name on my account!  I understand their reasons (read: stupidity) not to allow it, but come on...they would make much more money if they did.

And now with making the RealID integrated into the forums and who knows what's next, there is even more reasons to allow people to change the names on their accounts. I'm sure there are thousands of players who's accounts are in their parent's name.

And as a final note.  You guys have good points about privacy.  But at the same time most of these stupid fucks on the internet are more concerned about their anonymity.  Which I think is a good thing because there is many a time when I think there is too much anonymity on the internet sometimes and it breeds stupid people.  And before you say privacy and anonymity are the same thing, I believe that it's the attitude the makes the difference.  Privacy is someone just minding their own business, anonymity is someone doing or saying something they wouldn't otherwise if everyone knew it was them.

I think the whole idea will fall on it's face.  RealID between friends, excellent, awesome idea.  RealID between people you've never met and have no interest in meeting, fuck off.

I think this is part of the foundation of something bigger. The idea in itself is, as has been pointed out, ludicrous. Someone else mentioned them turning bnet into Facebook. I find that a likely scenario and say this is a step in that direction. They just haven't laid out all their plans to the public yet.

QuoteHello everyone,

I'd like to take some time to speak with all of you regarding our desire to make the Blizzard forums a better place for players to discuss our games. We've been constantly monitoring the feedback you've given us, as well as internally discussing your concerns about the use of real names on our forums. As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.

You, sirs, are unbelievably speedy at the spreading of news lol.

*EDIT* I'm glad they repealed this, though I was more in favor of a unique "nickname" for battle.net accounts. That way they could follow their "troll limiting" idea and have the nicknames appear for the in-game real id as opposed to full names.

Then I wouldn't confuse people when my first name shows up on real id, and I go by my middle name to them.

Wait. I may change my mind on this:

Ah, damn, still the creepy stalker issue (remind me to tell you guys about Carpenoctum).

Ian

Carpelol and the guild of roving Chris Hansons

Good times, good times.

Kiero

Carpe even stalked the ladies on alliance.

Do you know what "nemesis" means?
A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent;
personified in this case by a horrible cunt... me.

I'm reminded of

So true, so true ... even among guildies who don't know your real identity, there's still a sense of respect of selfcontrol just because you're closer to them than a random pug and have to see them constantly.
